Talk with your BAC advisor about the process to petition for excess units in your second semester or later. You cannot petition to take excess units in your second semester until AFTER first semester grades have been posted. UNITS EACH YEAR. A bachelor’s degree at UC Merced requires 120 units with specific requirements (major, GE, etc.).


Students who meet these requirements and wish to enroll in more than 18 units should complete a Petition for Excess Units form. Enrollment in more than 20 units will require approval by the Dean. In this case, the Petition for Excess Units form should be.

Enrollment in Excess Units for Summer Sessions. Students are advised to take no more than 12 units during Summer Session at UC Merced. Units above the maximum advisable amount are allowed only with permission of a students’ academic advisor. To request excess units during summer sessions, please email your advisor or submit an override request.


Students applying for excess units must have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or a minimum of a 3.3 GPA in their last semester. Enrollment above 20 units for Fall/Spring or 16 units for Summer may require a petition, please see an academic, Enrollment in Excess Units. Students must apply for enrollment in excess units each semester. Approval for enrollment in more than 18 units is conditional and determined by the student’s academic advisor. Students must have a previous term and cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be considered for enrollment in more than 18 units in a single semester.


EXCESS UNITS Students transferring to UC Merced from a regionally accredited four-year college or university may have up to 89 transferable semester (133.5 quarter) units and still be eligible to transfer. It is important to note, however, that UC Merced considers students who have completed more than 89, Excess Units .
